Didn't use a condom? Condom split? Forgot to take your pill? Worried that you / your girlfriend might be pregnant?

If you have forgotten to take your pill but have not had sex since, click here for more information about what you should do.

Don't panic ... if you have had sex without contraception or you think the contraception might have failed, it is still possible to prevent a pregnancy.

Within the first 3 days ... take a pill known as Emergency Contraception, within 72 hours (this is sometimes known as the morning after pill but it will actually work up to 3 days after having unprotected sex. However, the sooner you take this the better).

After 3 days, but before 5 days ... you can have a coil fitted.

After 5 days ... it is important that you get a pregnancy test as soon as possible.

You do not need to cope with an unplanned pregnancy on your own.

If the pregnancy test is negative or you have managed to have emergency contraception in time, this is a good time to think about your future contraception choices.

If you have had sex without a condom, you may have a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). Some STIs have no symptoms so it is important that you are tested. Condoms are free from various places to young people in this area using a C Card.

Where can you get emergency contraception?

Urgent appointments can be made with any GP or at the CASH (Contraceptive and Sexual Health) Clinic. Tell the receptionist 'I need an urgent appointment to see a doctor today please'.

You can also speak to your school nurse or turn up at Drop in Clinics across Bath and North east Somerset. All information is completely confidential.

Remember ... you should never feel pressured into having sex. It should be a decision that both you and your partner make together. It is illegal to have sex if you are under 16. Health professionals can provide confidential sexual health information, advice and contraception to you whatever your age if have decided to have sex.

Fact: You may have heard that emergency pills can make you really sick . In most cases this is not true. Very few people who take this medicine will be sick (vomit). If you are worried about this or any other side effects then speak to your pharmacist, doctor, nurse or local clinic for advice.
