Some basic explanations of words you might have heard.

Abortion – An operation to end a pregnancy.

Abstain / abstinence – To choose not to do something, e.g. to abstain from sex would be to chose not to have sex.

Anal Sex – When the penis is inserted into another person’s anus.

AIDS – Short for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome – a disease that destroys the body’s immune system.

Bisexual – Male or female who is sexually attracted to both males and females.

Blow Job – When someone puts a man’s penis into their mouths to give pleasure. Also known as oral sex.

Chlamydia – A very common sexually transmitted infection which, if untreated, can cause infertility in girls.

Ejaculate – When a man reaches climax and his penis produces sperm.

Emergency contraception – Also know as the ‘morning after pill’ this is a pill which women can take up to 72 hours after unprotected sex to help prevent pregnancy.

Foreplay – Any kind of sexual activity that leads up to but doesn’t include full intercourse.

Gay – A word meaning homosexual. Someone who is sexually attracted to people of their own sex.

Gonorrhoea – A sexually transmitted infection.

Heterosexual – A person who fancies people of the opposite sex.

Homosexual – A person who fancies people of the same sex.

Homophobia – The unreasonable hatred of homosexuals.

IUD – Another name for the coil – a contraceptive device inserted in the womb.

KY Jelly – A kind of lubricant you can buy used by some to aid sex.

Lesbian – A girl who fancies other girls.

Masturbate – To stimulate your own or someone else’s genitals for sexual pleasure by touching, stroking or rubbing.

Morning After Pills – Another name for emergency pills. Taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex the morning after pill prevents pregnancy.

Oral Sex – To stimulate the sexual organs of a partner using the mouth.

STI – This stands for Sexually Transmitted Infection. These are infections that are passed on through vaginal intercourse, anal sex or oral sex.

Termination – The means the same as abortion.
