Chlamydia - key facts:

  • Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a bacteria
  • Chlamydia can affect both men and women
  • 1 in 10 people under 25 who have been tested are infected with chlamydia
  • Most people won't have any obvious signs or symptoms or only get mild symptoms which they don't notice; so most people won't know they have the infection
  • If there are symptoms, they usually show up 1-3 weeks after coming into contact with chlamydia
  • If left untreated, in some people chlamydia can cause longer term health problems including infertility (not being able to have a baby), and pain, especially in the abdomen (area below your belly button)
